AUTO ACCIDENTS INCREASE WHEN HALLOWEEN FALLS ON A WEEKEND

Children racing home from school with trick-or-treating on their minds, motorists charging homeward and phoning to make sure all plans are in place, and an early sunset. Put it altogether and it is a witches brew for serious auto accidents. Statistics show that fatal car accidents increase when Halloween falls on a weekend says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. More folks participate in the holiday when it is on a weekend, and workers are more likely to get a jump on the evening when the holiday lands on a Friday. Here are a few tricks: If don't usually do so, and your child does not ride a bus, treat the youngster to a ride home; if you are driving home from work, turn off your cell phone and imagine that somewhere on your drive home your child, niece, nephew or grandchild will cross your path. Later, if teens are over, try to minimize their driving on Halloween night. Their lack of driving experience can leave them ill-prepared for the increased and unexpected hazards of driving on Halloween.

An early morning accident on Highway 80 in San Francisco left debris on the road. The driver of the single car accident left the scene and has not been found. It is unknown if the driver was hurt in the accident. The car hit the highway wall near Fremont Street.

The crash caused major damage to the highway wall and there is debris in the roadway, Johnston said. The No. 4 lane is closed, as well as the off-ramp to Fremont Street, and there is no estimate for when they will be reopened.

No other cars were involved in the accident.
Bakersfield Man in Hospital After Car Plunges Off Cliff

A 72-year-old man was trying to park his car at a Pismo Beach restaurant when the car plummeted over a cliff. He is recovering at Arroyo Grande Hospital. His wife died at the scene.

Neighbors said the couple might have been house hunting in Pismo Beach when they stopped to get lunch and the unexpected occurred, sending their car plummeting off a cliff.

Rescue crews were in a race against the clock, trying to free the elderly couple trapped inside before the tide comes in.

It took an hour to rescue the man from his car and they needed to use a rescue basket to get him back up the cliff. He may have pressed the gas pedal instead of the brake while parking the car. The car fell about 60 feet.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Avoid Car Accidents and Remember: Bicycles are Vehicles Too

The Memorial Day holiday last week reminded me that summer months are the times you are more likely to see bicyclists on our roadways. Then today I ran across Sue J.'s blog where she has composed a letter to the driver of a car with which she has had a couple of problems. Sue is an avid bicyclist who often shares the road with cars, trucks and SUVs. Let's keep an eye out for kids and all riders on bikes and try to avoid wrecks and other accidents - not only this summer, but year round. Drive safely, everyone.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Staff Writer
