Plane Crashes in Chattanooga

Four men were injured when a small plane crash landed in Chattanooga. The plane was trying to make an emergency landing at a Chattanooga airport and fell short of its goal. It landed in a shopping center parking lot, hit two cars and a lightpole.

Investigators were looking into whether the plane ran out of fuel as it approached Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport, police Sgt. Jerri Weary said.

The Beechcraft King Air twin turboprop had left Birmingham, Ala., for Georgetown, Ky., and was preparing to land in Chattanooga when it crashed Wednesday evening at the Brainerd Village Shopping Center, about 2,000 feet from the runway, according to authorities and a relative of one of the passengers. Bystanders helped pull the passengers from the plane.

The pilot noticed the fuel guage was close to empty during the flight and was unsure if the reading was accurate. He decided to try for an emergency landing in Chattanooga. All four men are in the hospital being treated for their injuries. The FAA is investigating the plane crash.

For more information on this subject, please refer to the section on Airline, Cruise, Bus and Other Mass Transit Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Plane Crash in California Kills Six

A small plane crashed on Friday, August 31, close to the Kern County Airport and killed a family of six after bursting into flames. The plane left from Santa Monica Valley Airport and was headed to the Kern Valley Airport when the plane crashed.

The Lancair Columbia was consumed in a grassfire sparked by the crash, reported shortly after 5:40 p.m., but the one-acre blaze was quickly contained, Kern County Fire Department Capt. Tommy Brown said.

All the passengers on the plane were killed in the accident, including at least one infant. The family was on their way to Kern county for a camping trip. The names of the deceased have not been released so family members could be contacted first.

Witnesses said that the plane looked like it stalled before the crash, but The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration say these are preliminary reports and will fully investigate the cause of the plane crash.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Airlines, Cruises, Buses, and Other Mass Tranist Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Jenny Albano

Camarillo WW2 Plane Crash Kills Man

A plane crash in Camarillo killed a 42-year-old man from Thousand Oaks. The man was flying a P-51D Mustang, a vintage World War 2 era plane. He did not contact the flight tower to report a problem before the plane crashed.

The victim
who had been practicing with a flight instructor, was performing his first solo landing in the aircraft when the crash occurred, Taillon said.

The instructor was standing near the runway during the accident, said Kellie Knauss, who works in the operations department at the airport.

The pilot had been practicing his takeoffs and landings at the time of the crash. The National Transportation and Safety Board (NTSB) is investigating the accident and has not issued any comment on the plane crash.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Airlines, Cruises, Buses, and Other Mass Transit Accidents.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Plane Crashes in Livermore and Two People Killed

A plane took off from Livermore Municipal Airport and crashed shortly after takeoff. The two seater, hand builit plane was only in the air for a short time when it banked and then crashed into a field. The plane crash happened on Saturday morning.

The Europa XS two-seater left around 8:30 a.m. and climbed 200 to 300 feet when the pilot made a 180-degree turn in an apparent attempt to come back to the airport, said Ian Gregor, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman.

The plane nose-dived into a grassy field between the airport and Las Positas Golf Course, said Sean Chapman, acting battalion chief with the Livermore/Pleasanton Fire Department.

"Unfortunately there was nothing we could do to save those folks aboard," he said. "There was no chance of survivability for this crash."

The pilot and his passenger were killed. No flight plan was filed. The accident is still under investigation.

For more information on this subject, please refer to our section on Airlines, Cruises, Buses, and Other Mass Transit.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Sandy Valley Plane Crash Kills One Man

A small plane crash near Sandy Valley, Nevada killed the pilot and only occupant of the plane. The plane was a single seat model.

Officials say the pilot was a resident of Sandy Valley who built the aircraft, called a "Vegas Sport Flyer." The man's name hasn't been made public. He was a licensed pilot and recently got his aircraft repair certification.

He took off from an air strip in Sandy Valley, but it wasn't immediately clear where he was headed. Firefighters from Sandy Valley were first to respond after the crash.

The man has been a licensed pilot since 1994. The FAA, as well as authorities from San Bernardino County, California are investigating the accident.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann

Small Plane Crashes in Missouri

A small plane crashed in a wooded area of Missouri killing all three people onboard. The pilot and two passengers were a family from Iowa on their way to Alabama. They died instantly from the crash.

The single-engine Piper Cherokee was en route from Jefferson City to Muscle Shoals, Ala., when controllers lost contact around 8:45 a.m. Saturday. DeClue said the family had been headed from there to Florida to take a cruise. He did not have additional details.

Based on initial reports, Randy Weber told controllers he had zero visibility and a strong headwind shortly before the crash, said Washington County Sheriff Kevin Schroeder.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the plane crash. The weather at the time of the crash was a light rain and very cloudy.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Shannon Weidemann
